What was once a $7.5 million damage award against Wal-Mart for discrimination now stands at $900,000, after a federal magistrate judge decided Monday that a jury’s compensatory award might have been punitive in nature. The ruling from Eastern District of New York Magistrate Judge James Orenstein marks the second time the judge has reduced the $7.5 million award. In 2005, Orenstein reluctantly imposed a $300,000 federal cap on punitive damages, leaving the total award at $2.8 million.
