Smithfield Foods Inc.’s effort to digest a rival pork producer has become a food fight, as a coalition of consumer and farming organizations are begging the Department of Justice to scrutinize the deal for antitrust concerns amidst fears for family farms. Smithfield, the nation’s largest pork producer, agreed to pay some $810 million for Premium Standard Farms, the nation’s second-largest pork producer. Capitol Hill legislators have already announced a desire to hold hearings on the deal.
