I recommend doing the paperwork on your own. I did my residency paperwork alone and it turned out fine. Be mindful of dates - medical/police clearances expire after a certain time, so if you don't coordinate how long it will take to get police clearance, your medical certificate can expire in the mean time. Put together an honest and full assessment of yourself and post it off to the nearest NZ Immigration office - which appears to be Pretoria.

i've been studying the emigration rules and regulations for years ,and next year if appropriate, i'm gonna, apply to go to new zealand myself, one thing i have lear'nt is you do not need either if you know what your doing, all the info put forward by them on your behalf is information that you have gathered yourself personally, because you are the only person with access to it, make sure you sell yourself in a big way regardless of how insignificant you feel it may be, for example that you are fluent in the english langauge, it's a fact a lot of these so called consultancies are just a rip off, they rely on your ignorance and insecurity

Depends.
Basically. No.

For the average case, I cannot see what the laywer or immigration consultant do.

Everything is one the web.
If you meet the conditions, you can see for yourself, fill in the forms: done.

If you have something really complicated or in some grey area, maybe it would help, but maybe phoning the immigration service first & asking them would work too.

I have gone through this process as a South African seeking a NZ spouse's visa and did the entire process myself. All the forms you need can be found here. Be warned though, the police checks on the South African side can be very slow so you will need to mark everything urgent and chase it up regularly. All in all you'll need to undergo medical examinations by an approved doctor (the immigration dept. will provide you with a listing of approved practises), police checks for wherever you'lve lived over the past 10 years and obviously all supporting paperwork like passport copies etc. It is quite straight forward really, you just need to keep copies of everything you send and be organised with your paperwork. Good luck!!

You don't necessarily need a lawyer, or a consultant. Go to this sit and you can download the forms and information you need. If you are struggling you may want to use outside help, but I suggest you try this alone and see how you go.You could contact immigration personally once you have read everything.

You don't say which country you are in.
If you are from the Philippines, India. Thailand or any African or Arabian country, take extra care about who you consult.
Use a NZ Government accredited consultant only -no one else. There are a lot of rip-off merchants who will take your money and provide nothing of value.
You will need only a good immigration consultant, not a lawyer UNLESS you get caught up with an unscrupulous rip-off merchant. Then you'll need a lawyer.

You don't need a lawyer, you need an immigration consultant, there are many here. You could find one by 'googling', immigration consultants, N.Z. or New Zealand Yellow Pages. The company who made the job offer should be able to help you.
