A federal judge said last week he wants to examine internal FCC documents regarding two large recent telephone company mergers to see if the Department of Justice protected market competition in approving the buyouts. Some consumer advocates cried foul over last year’s SBC-AT&T and Verizon-MCI deals, claiming the DOJ had rubber-stamped them. While reversal or new conditions for the now-completed mergers are unlikely, the court could possibly establish tougher obstacles for future mergers.
