Google has taken a new approach to managing legal affairs with the hiring of its latest general counsel, John Kent Walker Jr., formerly eBay’s deputy GC. Walker will manage the law department’s day-to-day affairs, but will not take on the typical role of chief legal officer. Instead, Google’s CLO will be David Drummond, who is senior VP of corporate development and had been serving as GC. Law firm consultant Peter Zeughauser says the division of GC and CLO jobs is not common, but “it does work very well.”
