For decades, many companies have viewed intellectual property as an asset in the background, something legal departments would care for, feed and quietly protect from infringers. But with IP taking on greater importance as a source of revenue, an increasing number of companies are hiring higher-level executives than ever before to craft and execute patent strategies. Yet these new IP “czars” say that creating a new position to supervise IP can cause tension in existing legal and business departments.
