Italy’s Fashion Houses Wake Up to the Impact of Counterfeit Goods

After years of dismissing counterfeiters as a nuisance, Italian design houses are overwhelmed by them. Fashion knock-offs account for 60 percent of the $6.4 billion spent on counterfeit goods in Italy, and have cost the Italian fashion industry over 40,000 jobs in the last decade. The problem may lie with the structure of the Italian fashion houses, which tend to be secretive and eccentric. To beat the counterfeiters, they will have to unite, get organized and take a businesslike approach to the issue.
