Judge Denies Tobacco Companies’ Bid to Keep Marketing ‘Light’ Cigarettes

A U.S. district judge for the District of Columbia has denied a request by tobacco companies to let them keep marketing “light” and “low tar” cigarettes until an appeal is settled in their case. Judge Gladys Kessler ruled in August that the cigarette makers violated racketeering laws and misled the public and ordered them to stop marketing the products. The companies asked the judge to hold off on enforcing the order, but she rejected that request last week.
