A Senate hearing on airline mergers Wednesday provided unexpected support for US Airways’ bid to buy Delta. A Transportation Department official testified that fewer, larger network carriers might benefit smaller communities, which is in line with US Airways’ arguments. But Delta Air Lines CEO Gerald Grinstein countered that the benefit only applies to mergers between airlines with little overlap — not the case with Delta and US Airways. The hearing comes as two key deadlines loom for Delta.
